AFTERFIELD

Anthony Anger

Statement

A field that remembers what passed through it

AFTERFIELD explores what remains after light has passed through a field: what is concealed, measured, exposed, eroded, remembered, or left behind.

Its starting point is LiDAR, light detection and ranging, which measures land with pulses of light. The first return comes back from the canopy and the visible surface; later returns come from the ground beneath. Gathered together, the returns form a point cloud: a field of evidence assembled from individual marks.

AFTERFIELD turns that idea into an original abstract system rather than a map. Each work begins as an invented terrain. Colour, edges, density, direction, texture and erosion are all read from the same surface, so they relate to one another the way geology does instead of being laid on top. No surveyed data is used; these landscapes exist only in the algorithm.

From across a room, each work reads as a single composition of fields, partitions and fractures. Up close it gives way to engraved marks, fibres, relief and erosion: a surface that could have been printed, woven or etched.

The sense that light has revealed something that had always existed beneath the visible world.

AFTERFIELD #04, Rift

Rift

Fractured terrain. Fault displacement, segmented land masses and interrupted plates: a sense of shifting earth, with its structure exposed.

5 works

AFTERFIELD #14, Canopy

Canopy

Surface density. Textured cover, fibre-like marks and layered fields like vegetation, with glimpses of the terrain concealed beneath.

13 works

AFTERFIELD #20, Reveal

Reveal

Subtraction. Erosion and partly removed surfaces expose the layers underneath, and open space becomes part of the composition.

7 works

Colour

Three palettes

Colour follows the terrain. Each work has a dominant foundation, a principal field, a secondary and a sparse accent, mapped to elevation, return depth and exposure rather than spread evenly.

Nocturne

Dark, violet, atmospheric and mineral.

2 works

Albedo

Luminous and pale; etched, with exposed structure. Albedo is the share of light a surface gives back.

10 works

Spectral Return

High-contrast signals: controlled turquoise, and a rare hot pink.

Process

The algorithm generates. The artist curates.

AFTERFIELD is deterministic. Every work is defined entirely by its seed and renders the same pixels on any machine; nothing is retouched after rendering.

The system produced hundreds of candidates. Anthony Anger reviewed them in rounds, at full size and in detail at 100%, and kept a work only if it answered all five of these questions:

  1. Composition. Does the structure hold from across a room?
  2. Colour. Is it a balance to live with for years?
  3. Identity. Is it clearly AFTERFIELD, and distinct from its siblings?
  4. Materiality. Does it reward sustained, close looking?
  5. Display. Can it run full-screen on a vertical 4K display without explanation?
